On Sunday (11/27) we have the opportunity to join a Ft Snelling naturalist on a hike to explore Abandoned summer homes (homes of birds and animals).
Please note: We are going to meet at the “Fort Snelling” Historic Site – Parking lot, up the hill by the fort itself at 12:30. Parking there is free.
At 12:40 we will walk down the trail to the “Ft Snelling State Park visitor center” to meet with the Naturalist and start the Abandoned homes walk at 1:00PM.
This is a Ft Snelling State Park event that we are going to join. There is no fee for this event.

Abandoned Homes
Join the Naturalist for this hike to search the park and look for the vacated homes of the park’s summer residents. Learn how birds and other animals construct and furnish their summer homes. Program will start at the Thomas C. Savage Visitor Center (the ft snelling state park visitor center)

Cost:
$0 – free parking by Ft Snelling.
Note: If you park at the Ft Snelling “State Park” (down by the river) you will need a yearly permit or pay $5 at the entrance. We are meeting up the hill by the fort itself then walking down to the park, parking by the fort is free.

By the Historic Site , i.e the Historic Fort Snelling, parking lot.
We will wait 10 minutes only then head down a trail to the T. Savage visitor center.

Follow the highways signs that say “Historic Fort Snelling” or “Fort Snelling Historic Site” not the Ft Snelling State Park.
Notices & Reminders:
1) Dress for the weather. Bring water. You will enjoy your walk, and nature much more if you are dressed properly. If you have any concerns please let me know ASAP.
2) If you rsvp “maybe” please change it to a “yes” or “no” by 10AM on the day of the event otherwise I will assume it’s a no.
3) A minimum of 1 “yes” reservation (besides me) is required for this event to occur. Even if we have 2 people signed up I will still meet you there. If you are the only RSVP and change your mind about going please call or text me.
4) Weather changes: Events are usually still on if there is rain or snow, unless the road conditions are bad or the rain is heavy. If the temperature or windchill is below -5 F event will be canceled.
5) If this event in cancelled by the Ft Snelling naturalist then I will post a comment here or update this description.
How many people show up?
Since this is an event organized by Ft Snelling State Park, there will likely be a large number of people and likely families with children.

5 people attended. It was fun being outdoors, looking at homes of insects, birds, foxes, beavers etc.. We walked at an even slower pace than usual as the naturalist educated us on habitat at Ft Snelling State Park.
